Ud over at v\u00e6re r\u00e5materiale til vinylon anvendes PVA i dag i vid udstr\u00e6kning til tekstillimning, bel\u00e6gninger, kl\u00e6bemidler, emulgatorer, film og andre industrielle omr\u00e5der. PVA-molekylet indeholder imidlertid et stort antal hydroxylgrupper, hvilket resulterer i d\u00e5rlig vandmodstand og stabilitet af PVA, hvilket p\u00e5virker dets anvendelse. I anvendelsen af kemisk fiberindustri har PVA ulemper som skinning, skumdannelse og utilstr\u00e6kkelig vedh\u00e6ftning til fibre. Derfor bruges kemiske modifikationsmetoder generelt til at forbedre dets vandbestandighed.
