I de senere \u00e5r har udviklingen af nye bionedbrydelige emballagematerialer f\u00e5et stor opm\u00e6rksomhed. Fornybare naturlige polymerer er blevet brugt til at evaluere den biologiske nedbrydelighed af slutbrugsprodukter baseret p\u00e5 polyvinylalkohol. Polyvinylalkoholmaterialer bruges i vid udstr\u00e6kning i bionedbrydelige syntetiske polymerer p\u00e5 grund af deres bionedbrydelighed under forskellige mikrobielle forhold. Polyvinylalkohol bruges i en r\u00e6kke forskellige industrier, herunder keramik, tekstiler, bel\u00e6gninger, papir og tr\u00e6. Desuden kan produkter af samme kvalitet bruges til forskellige form\u00e5l. I de senere \u00e5r har denne evne v\u00e6ret med til at \u00f8ge eftersp\u00f8rgslen efter polyvinylalkohol. P\u00e5 grund af dets egenskaber, s\u00e5som ethanol, vandopl\u00f8selighed, fedt- og oliebestandighed, er der flere mindre kendte alternativer at v\u00e6lge imellem. Polyvinylalkohols iboende egenskaber g\u00f8r den nyttig til anvendelser, der kun kr\u00e6ver milj\u00f8m\u00e6ssigt acceptable materialer.
