Op dit moment is PVA niet alleen de grondstof voor vinylon, maar wordt het ook op grote schaal gebruikt voor het appreteren van textiel, coatings, kleefstoffen, emulgatoren, films en andere industri\u00eble toepassingen. De PVA-molecule bevat echter een groot aantal hydroxylgroepen, wat resulteert in een slechte waterbestendigheid en stabiliteit van PVA, wat de toepassing ervan be\u00efnvloedt. In de chemische vezelindustrie heeft PVA nadelen zoals schilfering, schuimvorming en onvoldoende hechting aan vezels. Daarom worden chemische modificatiemethoden over het algemeen gebruikt om de waterbestendigheid te verbeteren.
