Als verpakkingsmateriaal kan PVA het binnendringen van zuurstof voorkomen om oxidatieve achteruitgang van het product te voorkomen en kan het ontsnappen van aroma, geur en kooldioxide voorkomen, zodat het product zijn smaak niet verliest of muf wordt en de houdbaarheid sterk wordt verlengd. Het is de beste barri\u00e8relaag die tot nu toe is gevonden.
